Term 5 & 6
I hope you all had a restful and happy Easter holiday and are feeling refreshed for the Summer term. Our theme for this term is 'Keen to be Green' and will revolve around planting, growing, recycling and environmental issues.
Our planting project continues this term as our seedlings develop beautifully in Bannister classroom. Planters have been moved to the outside area in preparation for all the planting to come. Children are in vegetable teams and will be tasked with looking after their plants through the term. Hopefully by the end of the Summer term we will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour and have a salad from the garden with our lunch. Our DT this term will be linked to our planting as we paint and decorate recycled tyres to create more planters.
In Science this term, Mrs Ellis will be discussing the changes as humans develop from birth to old age. Research tasks will be sent home most weeks. Generally, these will be discussions for you to have with your child. In Art lessons the class will be studying the artist David Hockney and imitating his style of painting. Several children in the class said they have or will be going to the Hockney exhibition at Tate Britain. This will be an amazingly enriching experience for your child if you have been able to get tickets.
Several parents have commented that they like their children bringing Maths work home. This gives you an opportunity to see what work your child is doing at school and also to see how they are managing. This will continue this term as we consolidate our number learning and cover work around measuring, estimating and comparing acute, obtuse and reflex angles. The children will also draw given angles and measure them in degrees. We will also extend our shape knowledge and use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles.
Please continue to practice times tables and addition and subtraction with your child, as the 'Big Maths Beat That tests' will continue as well.
Our literacy lesson will include a range of texts to highlight recycling issues and the class will be asked to think critically about environmental concerns. We will be designing information pamphlets and writing articles for our own ‘Green Newspaper’, which hopefully will have a name soon. Please continue to encourage your child to read every evening. Comprehensions will continue to form part of every week, but reading for pleasure is definitely the way to improve reading skills. We will continue this term to have a focus on spelling strategies to learn spellings. Each child now has a personal list of words they find tricky to spell and these will form part of our weekly tests.
Our twice weekly trips to the Common will hopefully also continue this term. A huge thank you to the two loyal mums who give up their time every week to walk us over to the Common. Without their support, we would not be able to go. These trips to the Common give the class a valuable opportunity to run around and enjoy some additional outside space. If you are able to give up some of your time on a Monday and Thursday lunchtime from 11:50 – 12:30, please let me know. I am sure the mums who regularly come with us will not mind missing a week or two!
Please can I ask that ALL items of clothing are labelled. You would be surprised how many times a day jumpers are found on the floor, and with a label we can return it to its rightful owner.
Our class email is Garrett@thewellsfreeschool.co.uk
This class email will be used to update you with information regarding the learning taking place in class each week, with ideas on how you can support learning at home.
You can also use this to contact me regarding your child’s learning. Please note that while we endeavour to answer emails as soon as possible, we will not be able to answer these at the weekend or evenings/holidays.
Any other enquiries e.g changes to collection arrangements, lost property, lunches, should be sent to the school office.
Please keep checking the school website, especially the school calendar for upcoming events.
