Science
At The Wells Free School, our vision for science is to inspire every child to be curious, courageous and thoughtful about the world around them. We believe that high-quality science education gives pupils the knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills they need to understand natural phenomena, ask meaningful questions, test ideas and make informed decisions. Science should be purposeful, practical and exciting, enabling pupils to see themselves as scientists who can explore, explain, predict and solve problems.
Our science curriculum is open and ambitious for all pupils, regardless of background, ability or starting point. Through excellent teaching, carefully sequenced knowledge and hands-on investigation, children develop confidence, resilience and independence as learners. They learn to observe closely, classify, compare, measure, record, analyse evidence and communicate their thinking clearly. In doing so, they build both substantive scientific knowledge and the disciplinary understanding needed to work scientifically.
Science at TWFS is rooted in real-world relevance. We make creative use of our school environment, outdoor spaces and local community so that pupils can connect scientific ideas to everyday life, environmental responsibility and future careers. We want children to recognise how science has changed lives, how it continues to shape society, and how their own choices can contribute to a healthier, fairer and more sustainable future.
By the time pupils leave us, they will have developed a secure foundation in biology, chemistry and physics, a strong scientific vocabulary, and the confidence to question, reason and investigate. Above all, they will understand that science belongs to everyone and that their curiosity, ideas and actions can make a positive difference to the world.
At The Wells Free School we follow Developing Experts to deliver our Science Curriculum.
