Reception – Nightingale Class
Welcome to Nightingale’s class page.
This page will be updated every term to give you an insight into what the term will have in store, including learning opportunities, topics to be covered and chances for home learning.
Terms 5 & 6
Our theme across the school for terms 5 and 6 is 'Go Green', focusing on the environment and our responsibilities for protecting it. In Nightingale class we will start by planting seeds in our outside area and looking at what they need in order to grow. Whilst watching them grow we will learn about parts of plants and begin to recognise and name common garden plants, flowers and vegetables. We will finish term 5 by looking at food we can grow, the process of grain to bread and what is meant by a healthy and balanced diet.
In term 6 we will learn about how to care for the environment around us, keeping the local area tidy, picking up litter and recycling. Also, once our flowers and vegetables have started to grow, we will be hunting for mini beasts. We will create bug houses, keep a mini beast diary and research names of creepy crawlies on the class iPads. We will then move onto looking at larger animals, how they live, what they eat and the food they produce. The topic will conclude with a Year R and 1 trip to Kent Life.
Please let me know if you have anything you would like to share with us related to this topic, e.g. books, photos, small plants, old gardening magazines etc.
Phonics this term will be focusing on consolidating skills for reading. Recognition of the phonemes is a strong point, now we need to practise blending in order to read words. If you would like to help your child consolidate these skills, www.phonicsplay.co.uk have some great games that your children are very familiar with.
Mathematics Mastery is proving to be a very engaging, fun and well liked programme which the children are really enjoying. The repetitive phrases, songs and hands-on activities allow the children to apply and explain their mathematical knowledge on a daily basis.
This term we will be focusing on measuring, grouping and sharing and money.
As you are aware, learning continues outside the classroom, therefore please keep us informed of your child’s ‘wow’ moments and learning at home and elsewhere.
Due to success of our weekly Welly Walks, we will be continuing with this on a Monday afternoon until the end of the year. The aim of the walk is to provide the children with opportunities to explore and experience nature, seasons, animals and plant life in the environment around them.
As weather is a huge part of Understanding the World, we will be going out come rain or shine, so please ensure your child has a pair of wellies and a suitable waterproof coat every Monday so they can fully take part in all activities. Equally as the weather improves please provide a hat and apply sun cream accordingly.
